IMR (2020) is the first part of the trilogy IMR / SWM / TC by artist Samantha Bohatsch. In IMR – short for 'In My Room' – two people meet online and, in the so-called real world. The ostensible boundary fades away if ever it existed at all. At the center of Bohatsch's work is the confrontation with the ensuing feelings and sensations.
Bohatsch's lyrics are rich with intertextual references (UFO36, Lady Gaga, and others) embedded in diary-like passages. They talk about romantic feelings, doubts and disappointments; their language is always reduced and poignant in contrast. Great feelings are the signature of youth, adolescence is an episode marked by upheavals and departures.
Personal narratives interweave with collective experiences, creating easily identifiable characters. Samantha Bohatsch's work revolves around the question of how relationships and desire, and also friendships evolve in the age of social media.
